Finca Sofia sits on the edge of a hill suspended at the edge of the Valle de Coto Brus. The Talamanca Mountains rise to over 7000 feet across the valley, and, directly to the east, Volcan Baru presides over all, reaching to over 10,000 feet.
The valley between the mountains and Finca Sofia is filled with the many small and large coffee farms and cattle ranches, interspersed with remnants of the original pre-montaine forest that covered the entire area 100 years ago.
Natural reforestation on Finca Sofia was begun in the mid-1990s. Seven years ago extensive plantings of hardwoods began, and to date over 2000 trees have been added to the forest. As a result, the forest is changing and becoming more mature. The bird and mammal populations have increased, by species as well as numbers.
A 1000 sq ft bodega (garage/workshop) is equipped with small and large power tools, counters and storage shelves. A kitchenette and bath, along with a bed, provide sleeping quarters for the caretaker who stays on-site whenever owners are absent. Small sheds provide storage for garden and farm equipment and a pump house.
Finca Sofia is located in the small neighborhood of Linda Vista, just 6 miles from San Vito. Founded in 1951 by Italian immigrants, San Vito is the center of a thriving agricultural area where some of the best coffee in Costa Rica is raised. The town retains an Italian flavor, with many descendants of the original immigrant families still living in the area. The Dante Aligheri Italian Center offers free lessons in Italian, and has records and photographs of the early years of the town history.
All services are available in San Vito, including excellent medical services and a small hospital, markets (stocking many imports desired by the expat community,) and stores offering everything from clothing and shoes to hardware, technology, paint and auto parts.
